Gorgasnax 2: The Hunt for Gorgasnax (1977)

Seven years have passed since Karl Weathers survived the horror of Gorgasnax and faced the ridicule of a world that didn’t believe his story. Intent on facing his fear of the forest, Karl and his few friends have returned to Westlake Lodge, armed to the teeth and intent on finding proof of the Gorgasnax’s existence. But in the dark of the forest, who will be the hunter?—and who will be hunted?

Design

Another common trope in horror/thrillers is the concept of the unseen monster. We never truly see the full extent of the monster’s form. Maybe its eyes glare at us from the dark. Maybe we hear the skittering sounds it makes. But we never truly see the monster itself. It is this anxiety of the unknown that makes monsters like this truly scary.

You know what else sounds a lot like a monster we’ve never truly seen? A cryptid. Gorgasnax is a marrying of these two concepts together: a cryptid horror movie where you’re not quite sure where it will strike from next or who will die off-screen with blood-curdling screams.

Gorgasnax does a reverse take on Screaming Eagle’s unique guest gimmick: now, the guests are hunting Gorgasnax! Evade the hunters, trick them into shooting your enemies, and isolate them from their friends to gain massive benefits!

Ideation

There’s a lot of ways we could have done Gorgasnax. As you can see, a lot of the early poster designs hint that Gorgasnax is some sort of giant spider or arachnid creature. While cool, we didn’t think that this hit upon the notes we wanted for this monster. The true fear comes from never being able to see what Gorgasnax actually is. In the end, the final poster we chose puts the focus on the hunters, scared and searching for the monster that took their friends. In the back, we see a hint of what’s to come: monstrous eyes peering at its prey.

Strategy

We really wanted you to feel like an elusive cryptid while playing as Gorgasnax. To achieve this, Gorgasnax gets even more bonus points for free by just being alone in a room to begin with. Plus, we made it so that the hunters actively hurt any monster they share a room with, even Gorgasnax. This leads to you wanting to avoid them unless you explicitly have a good reason to be with them.

Hunter Hunted is one of those reasons. With its almost lax condition, Gorgasnax can permanently remove a hunter from a board for an easy 7 points, which is some of the best effort to payout ratios in the entire game. Just be careful: your opponents know you’ll want to find isolated hunters and might clump them together to prevent that!

Play If You Like:

• To play in your own corner of the map
• Having tools to disrupt other players
• Having a clear gameplan to progress

Avoid If You Dislike:

• Giving opponents agency over your powers (they can spook hunters)
• Straightforward gameplans with little flexibility
• Accidentally hurting others
